OUR EXPRESSION

The character of the mountain,
in everyday life.

In architecture, furniture and the fabrics we wear. TABUCHI brings the character of Aji stone into different forms of everyday life.

Every stone from the same mountain has its own colour, pattern and form. We begin with that individuality, considering where it will belong and how it will be touched. Our approach starts with the material, not simply with a finished product.

OUR ORIGIN / TABUCHI STONE

For over 140 years,
a life with Aji stone.

TABUCHI’s expression is rooted in the quarrying work of Tabuchi Stone. Since Yohei Tabuchi began the family stone business in the Meiji era, successive generations have worked with the mountains of Aji. Quarrying began with medium-grained stone before moving to fine-grained stone. Understanding the value of each block has remained central to that work.

Tabuchi Stone is a quarry operator in Aji, Kagawa. Managing part of the Ocho-ba quarry, its work begins with extracting stone and understanding its individual character.

No two stones are alike. Reading their surfaces, working with local craftspeople and considering the places they will inhabit: Tabuchi Stone connects the mountain with everyday spaces.

FROM THE QUARRY

Knowing the material.
Finding its potential.

The fine-grained Aji stone quarried by Tabuchi Stone includes Kurokuchi and Shirokuchi. Tone, mottling and naturally split surfaces reveal differences best understood in the raw material.

OUR PRACTICE

Bringing out the stone,
through every stage of work.

01 / SELECT

Kurokuchi and Shirokuchi. Distinct characters.

Tabuchi Stone’s fine-grained Aji stone includes Kurokuchi, with its distinctive mottling and rich, grounded character, and the lighter-toned Shirokuchi, used for memorials, lanterns and architectural work. Its practice values the differences within Aji stone itself.

02 / INHERIT

The skill to quarry. The eye to understand.

Fifth-generation Yasumitsu Tabuchi took over the family business in 2003. Quarrying skills, an eye for the material and careful, conscientious work guide Tabuchi Stone’s practice. As custodians of a natural material, its craftspeople work to carry its beauty and value to the next person.

03 / CREATE

From places of remembrance to everyday spaces.

Alongside rough stone, Tabuchi Stone’s work encompasses memorials, lanterns, sculpture and architectural materials. Projects range from a temple ramp and reclining Buddha sculpture to stone-clad living-room walls. Inherited skills provide a foundation for finding new places where stone can belong.
